ONLINE DRAWING CRITIQUE #1
DUE DATE: October 1 (12:00 a.m.-posting deadline)
Hello, Everyone:
By now you should be well-versed in the concept of an art critique, having been through two in-class ones to date. As you know, the premise of an art critique is the review of someone's creative work (the work, not the creator of the work!) with comments on it's good or bad qualities.
Experience has shown that students generally dislike having their art work critiqued in a public forum such as the classroom, and that they also dislike critiquing fellow students works for fear of upsetting them, or generating an argument (or both!). Though that can be (& is) an important learning tool in art criticism, I can understand the discomfort that some of you might possess within you when the much dreaded "crit" day rolls around. I believe that this new critique formula will encourage, at least some of you, to be more open to expressing your genuine thoughts about an artwork; your likes and dislikes, and reasonings for those feelings.
That being said, we're going to try an experimental project. I have set up a blog site, as you see before you, that has images of all the homework (if you turned your work in) that we're to critique. The images are to the right of this webpage under the "Art Work" title. The drawings posted are not labeled with the person's name and who drew them, but instead have been assigned a number only. That number is how you will reference the drawings you comment on in your posts. You have been given access to help "author" this blog, which means you can post on this site, which is part of what you'll be doing for this project.
The Online Drawing Critique #1 project consists of three parts:
1. Visit each picture, studying them in detail. Note their formal qualities and also any concept, or narrative themes which may be apparent in the drawing.
2. Next, post comments to this blogsite on each of them (in chronological order), even if it's a short sentence. You will use the number of the drawing you're referring to at the beginning of each post. For example:
' #2. I didn't like the drawing because the directional light source wasn't rendered very well.'
As in the above example, you should mention what you like, or don't like about the artwork. Back that up with why you feel the way you do. For instance, don't just say, "I don't like it at all." Give a reason.
3. Then you are to respond to any five posts regarding your drawing (you should get a minimum of 15, because there are 14 of you and I will comment on each drawing personally, also). You may choose to pick the five that you respond to. You may also respond to more, as well as to respond to responses. The idea is to generate a dialogue about each work.
To reiterate; you are viewing all the drawings that are at the link sites under "Art Work" on the right of this page. You're then to post a comment for each one by the deadline (midnight, Oct 1st). Question: can you add a post that has all the drawings along with your comments as a single post? Yes, just be sure it's numbered properly and posted by the deadline.
You will be assessed ( P/F ) on your level of participation for this project. I would expect, as aforementioned, that you will have commented on each drawing, and responded to at least five posts on your drawing..
Let's get started-time is short!
Good luck and I'll "talk' to you in cyberspace....
