Drawing #1

Here we go! My feeling is that this is an excellent example of what you can do, with what appears to be a rather mundane subject matter, if you put your mind to it. The subject matter normally would not particularly interesting to the most people, but the way in which they have portrayed it in this drawing IS. There are a number of intriguing aspects to this work: Why, for example, did the student choose to not show the face or hands of the model? Was that a deliberate choice in composing this? There is no skin visible, whatsoever. In fact, the clothing and chair appear to be the primary subject matter. The chair is very interesting. The ripped, drooping piece of cloth, hanging down from the bottom of the chair attracts my eye almost immediately. I wouldn't have conceived it as a major player in a successful drawing. The composition: is that due to conscious choice, or did the student just set up their easel and go to work without thinking, unknowingly stumbling upon the fruits of a well-composed composition?! The whole of the drawing is rendered very beautifully; accuracy of line, shape, color, value, shadow all come together well to make this a successful, resolved, and interesting artwork.

I await your thoughts and comments....
